I certainly understand your sentiment of the need for immediate action, even at the cost of the "freedom" sensibilities we have become accustomed to. But my gut tells me that under every scenario, the results will most likely be catastrophically messy and brutal. Would it really be possible for even "the right" authoritarian regime to successfully put the puzzle pieces together properly to dig humanity out of this mess? It would by far be the greatest technological achievement of all time if it were even possible. The social upheaval could go in any direction, but almost certainly in a severely terrible one.

I just wonder if this is going to be a human bottleneck event in the not so distant future.

In any case, holding out hope that authoritarianism can save us, just seems desperate and misguided, and even naive.
